You guys heard of Turo?

Anything that disrupts major companies is cool with me. Actually, monopolies getting angry at independent competition is fantastic.

I can't rent one, no cell phone. And there is no way I'm letting a stranger take my car. There is a lot of shit that can go wrong that accident insurance won't cover.

Do I post so infrequently to warrant that response!? Tongue I'm still lurking. Just very busy with my job and I've all but lost the urge to argue with people on the internet.

I like the idea of all these gigging apps that either let you rent people, places, or things but the more I look in to it the more I fear it is just another way the upper class are pushing people further away from sustainable profitable jobs. When you look at a cost benefit analysis of something simple like Uber it quickly breaks down to being only a 9 dollar an hour job and even worse when you consider that a regular 9 dollar an hour job would come with perks like vacation, healthcare, bonuses, free sodas, and whatever other little things come with having an actual job with protections that come with that.

At my job, they have a total benefits page where you are shown exactly all the things that are being paid for you and I have so many benefits it is awesome. The gigging economy is trying to make an apples to hammers comparison and hope that nobody thinks about the wear and tear on their shit! GrubHub is another example of a premium service at dirt cheap prices. It doesn't take care of the people and there are people that will use these services as their primary income source and that is problematic.

Oh, and there is no way I would rent out my car!

I did make a fair bit of money renting out my mother's house while she was in a care facility...

Yeah, haven't we all.

That's why we welcome the odd nutter here and there. Gives us something to do.
A fun distraction from life, so to speak.

RE: You guys heard of Turo?
I had an experience with a Taxi company recently. I was going from the hotel to the airport, and I knew the ride would be about $10. Someone else from the hotel wanted to ride with, and I told him I'd cover the fare. Upon arriving at the airport, I was told that it would be $10 PER PERSON and that we were not allowed to split the fare, so to speak. Doesn't this go against the very concept of sharing a cab with someone? Confused and a little angry, I told the driver that no one from the cab company told me that they charged per rider, and that I didn't even feel I had to pay the extra ten bucks.

Mind you, the cab company required me to book the cab THE DAY BEFORE to reserve a ride to the airport.

So, all in all, my experience with this company was costly, inconvenient and unnecessarily difficult.

Now, with Uber, set up an account, and the hassle is over. You notify that you want a ride, and a driver shows up within a reasonable amount of time. Easy. It's honestly a wonder that cab companies are even still in business.

I think that the guy was jacking you, because that isn't how cab rides generally work, AFAIK. Most of them actually say that right on the side of the cab.

Nah, I looked a bunch of places up and apparently it just depends on the city. Smaller cab companies in less populated cities tend to do their rates like this because they get less business, and expect a rate per rider because otherwise they'd make very little money. I also talked with the manager at the company and she told me the same thing, as well as a few other cab companies in that city (Cedar Rapids, IA).

I never ended up paying the extra ten dollars anyway, so I didn't get jacked. I paid my $10 and exited the cab, with no tip, specifically because the driver apparently didn't feel the need to tell us that they charged per person rather than per ride, which I felt was legitimately disingenuous.

Regardless of all of that, a ride to the airport from the hotel I was at, with Uber, would've cost about $8.50, compared to the $10 fare with the cab company. So yeah, like I said, it's a wonder that cab companies are even still a thing anymore.
