Demons are fallen angels. They were cast out of Heaven along with Satan for joining his rebellion against God. They are not red skinned grotesques with pitchforks as the world would have you believe. Demons (or Tanar'ri) are chaotic evil aligned servitors who reign in the infinite layers of the Abyss. They are ruled by different demon princes like Demogorgon, Yeenogou, Graz'zt, Ocrus and others.
It says so in the sacred scriptures, edition 3.5. Personally, I've never gotten into 4th edition.

To be fair to Lucent he is being internally consistent with his belief system. At least he really believes this stuff and then follows it through to it's logical conclusion. After all Jayzus exorcised demons from people with medical problems, something modern medicine has still not managed to accomplish even with it's so called medical science backing it up. Gah what a guy Jayzus was.
