A recent Pew report found that 69% of all Catholics do NOT believe that the Eucharist at mass is the true body and blood of Christ (transubstantiation)...which is not in alignment with the teaching of the Catholic Church. It truly is a shocking statistic.
So it's "truly shocking" to this idiot's small brain that a fucking cracker is just a fucking cracker? It's truly shocking that it's not magic?

I grew up Catholic and didn't know that the belief in transubstantiation was a thing until I had long been away from the religion.
I thought the whole "body and blood of Christ" thing was just something they said to make it seem important.

Cafeteria catholics are everywhere, I'm married to one.
When pressed I think a majority of catholics will tell you that they pick and choose what to believe. The problem is with dogma, not people.
Being told you're delusional does not necessarily mean you're mental.

I don't think that the 31% really do, rather, I think that they are just paying lip service to the whole idea. Back in the Day, when the Church would burn people alive for having "desecrated" the so-called "Body of Christ," that's when they really believed in it. The only reason that the Catholic Church has influence now is because it had influence then; the whole enterprise has run out of gas and is just coasting to complete irrelevance.

Hmmm...this doctrine is called called a mystery but it really is not as mysterious as it seems. The sacrament changes the final cause but not the material cause. The result is a new substance in the Scholastic sense for using the word substance, i.e. as the manifestation of causes in a single unity. Catholic use the same wording when referring to their denomination as the body of Christ as they do the host, also referred to as body of Christ. My translation would be something like this is the people (food, texts, etc.) dedicated as a means for fulfilling Christ's redemtive purpose in the world.
Church-speak is kind of a pet peeve of mine. And yet this is a nomenclature refined over 2000 years to be as exact as possible so another pet peeve of mine is when people unfamiliar with the jargon go off on it.

One explanation for a cantrips efficacy is just as ridiculous as any other, IMO.
The church has had obvious need to refine their superstitions over the centuries, tied as their existence has been to the acceptability of their beliefs among their constituency, and the changing beliefs and demographics of that constituency.
Whether they seek to explain how the magic works in the language of the gutter or by flowery prose - both are, equivalently, explanations for how the magic works.

*shrug* They believe in talking snakes, talking donkeys, the voice of God coming out of a flaming shrub, touch-healing, walking on water, transmutation, a global flood, magic iron, demons possessing pigs, angels, necromancy, etc etc. Believing in transubstantiation doesn’t seem like much of a stretch.
