Role Models

I believe these three people are visionaries, capable of seeing far beyond the present situation, whose intellects are focused on achieving some grand ideal, for the greater good of humanity. Very much "what could be" people.

Rupert Murdoch because, he is an incredibly wealthy person with heavy influence on what kind of media people consume. In other words, exactly the kind of person I want to be.

Aldous Huxley because, I see him as a kind of mad genius, with some brilliant imaginations for how he wanted society to function.

George H. W. Bush because, I like that speech he gave, about man's way of doing things, and nature's way of doing things, and how the "law of man" would come to rule human affairs.

Well, you're easily impressed.

Millions of people also watched Hitler's hateful, fear-mongering racist conspiracy crap speeches, so are you going to say that he must have done something right as well?

How about Jim Jones?  He was a very impressive person who convinced hundred of people to kill themselves and others, including their own children.  That's pretty amazing by your standards.

It helps us become great. When we don't have some far-reaching ideal to work towards, we become lazy, complacent, and mediocre in our efforts.

You really expect to EVER reach the level of the people on your list?

Having a role model sets you up for disappointment, failure, and depression. There will come a time when you realize that you will never approach (much less obtain) the ludicrously impossible ideals you’ve set for yourself. Self satisfaction is a much more fulfilling goal.

I try to do what the nurses tell me - that's about it. George Orwell deserves a mention though still...although not to the extent that I've even read his wiki page.

RE: Role Models
There's an aspect to having a role model where you want what other people tell you to want rather than figuring that out for yourself. I think it's fine to recognize qualities in others that you admire but when it comes to wanting to emulate those qualities or aspirations, you really need to break down why those are attractive/important to you. Sometimes, you can go half a dozen miles down the road towards a successful career and trying to be a confident, funny person only to realize these qualities you were emulating were a misguided attempt to be loved/be worthy/earn love from others. You waste a whole lot of time being someone else and the love you supposedly earned isn't yours because you're not really you anymore.

I got married because people told me that's what I wanted. I went to school because that's what was expected, my ideal of an adult and success didn't include "doing art for myself". I attempted to take my life based on chasing the aspirations of people I looked up to without examining the real reasons I was making those qualities so important. Not doing that anymore. So, agree with Boru. I aspire to be me.

Striving upward is what gives life meaning. It's good to have a lofty ideal.

Depends on the individuals definition of upward compared to what others observe.

I'd describe your's as circular at best. There may be a drain involved.

Thinking on doubtless I haven't read his wiki page because I don't want to be disappointed - never meet your heroes, and all that.

I might not become a media mogul, or the President, but I am already something of an author, and growing in my authorship all the time.

So your goal is to become great by promoting lies and political division among fellow Americans?  Such lofty goals.

Most people hear only what they want to hear. Just because some people take advantage of this fact to become rich and powerful, is of no consequence.
