He engaged in the "excesses of this World", and, by that, scandalized many. (I can't believe that I am saying any of this.) Therefore, the temporal punishments of his excesses and other sins would need to be cleansed in the fires of Purgatory before his soul made its way to Paradise. Well, that's the way it was taught to me in my Catechism clasdes.

But there's not a set time for a soul to be in Purgatory. Since he was undoubtedly shriven before he died and given the number of the devout who prayed for him, and the Masses said on his behalf, he could have been purified a nanosecond after his death.
And those shoes were a gift.
