Humans are animals - what's so hard to understand about that? Similarly, violin music has been described as the sound of horsehair scraping over catgut*; describing something in as disparaging a way as you can imagine takes nothing away from what it actually is.

Yeah, don't give me this science crapola - says the guy sitting at a computer made from composite synthetic materials and precision microprocessors made possible because of quantum mechanics, connected to the internet giving him access to the combined knowledge of the Earth. Probably at some point he has, or will, owe his very life to medical science crapola derived from chemistry and evolutionary biology made possible because some of his fellow humans recognise that we actually are animals, made of meat and bones just like every other mammal on the planet. Stating that humans are animals is a statement of fact. It's been well researched, documented, and expounded upon for generations going back centuries since the dawn of evolutionary science.
The fact that you take this as somehow derogatory mystifies me given that saying that humans are animals is a statement and not an insult. Specifically, humans are primates, most closely related to the chimpanzee, who exhibits a vast multitude of humanlike behaviors and physical similarities despite being a completely different species that split off from a common ancestor millions of years ago.

The same science that determined this is the same science that gives us modern medicine given that the understanding of the genetic code is giving us very modern breakthroughs in cloning (organs and parts), stem cell research, and viral research (viruses often evade vaccines through genetic mutations - so keeping track of those is vital for vaccine development as well as HIV/AIDS resesarch.)

Actually, we not only know a lot about the human mind, but thanks to evolutionary science (among others), we know a lot about the minds that came before us on the evolutionary line and what set us apart from them and our closest living cousins now.
Recognizing that we're primates gives us a sense of place in the universe.
