What's really funny is that in that scene, the straw is actually key to Jules establishing dominance over Brett, because the slurping sound of Jules finishing Brett's drink as he stares Brett down tells the viewer who's in charge and who's about to catch a round. Without the slurping straw and the direct stare, that scene loses punch.
So much for straws being effeminate. If I finish your drink without asking, I'm challenging you, in one sense.
