Right; they are just sponges. They just absorb. They don't have any brains that can think and process information, or peers to socialize and develop with, and they certainly don't have genes that help determine who they will be. They exist solely to emulate and please their parents.

That is because he has also made a whole world in his head based on the false data that excites him. So if you show him that only a weather balloon crashed in Roswell, he won't believe you because he already has a whole fantasy world of aliens secretly visiting Earth and giving people messages and whatnot, which has turned into a hobby and a passion project.

The problem with conspiracy theories isn't faulty information it's faulty information processing. It's the reasoning patterns used to reach conclusions, and not the accuracy of the facts, that's problematic. That why, as you said, the problem doesn't really go away if you just throw facts at people. And that's why you can find conspiracy theories within religious circles (i.e. the jesuits are infiltrating protestant churches) and within secular circles (i.e. the government faked the moon landing).

Ah, another secret poll you conducted?
Quote:It is based on false and antiquated beliefs about the mind, like brainwashing or mind control.

Well it's in the dictionary of course, that would seem like a good start.
noun
1. information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.

Quote:of course, nobody here actually thinks propaganda has worked on them, they just think it's worked on everybody they disagree with.

How you love to tell others what they think. I of course can't speak for anyone else, but of course propaganda has worked on me, like anyone else I wasn't born with the ability or the desire to think critically, or to strive to be objective, and to rational, these are things people learn to do. When they have done so, they are a lot more likely to question claims, and set a higher bar for credulity, and then of course subjective beliefs and the irrational arguments that are offered in support of them, are less likely to find traction.
You are projecting bias onto everyone who doesn't chare your beliefs, but you are the one setting a subjective standard for one deity, that could as easily be used to believe in countless others. and not just deities of course.

The problem with conspiracy theories, is they are lapped up without sufficient, and sufficiently objective evidence. Not unlike religion of course.

It is still a real aspect of learning, but all the implications and inferences that it used to have are wrong.

Operant conditioning is still taught in Psych 101, regardless of its defunct origins.

What are "all the implications and inferences " which conditioning used to have which are now considered wrong? Which ones did you think I was implying?

Humans were designed by evolution to adapt to different environments, including social environments. Conditioning is one way that is accomplished. As people get older, they often learn beyond their early conditioning. However, even though people can learn in different ways, their early social conditioning can also limit that additional learning. Few people are perpetual students except in their particular specializations within their social groups. This is clearly evidenced by the fact that most people adopt their parents' religions and politics.
