Johnny has no idea what a photon is. I imagine he thinks it's the couch that folds out into a bed.

Nobody even argued that. But I get it, you got yourself in a hole and now you have to find some way to slither out of it, lol.
The claim taken from Genesis, was that the planet existed before the sun, and as if this weren't wrong enough, it is depicted to have had vegetation on it. John seems to think the necessary light came from elsewhere, though I have not seen anything approaching an explanation of where? Photons is all we have had, it lacks any depth of explanatory power, and of course the gravitas of the trump apologist card goddidit using magic powers.

They're eating the same thing they eat now—light. Do we need to repost the equation?

6 CO2 + 12 H2O + (SUN)Light Energy → C6H12O6 + 6 O2 + 6 H2O
Where from John, the sun hadn't been magic'd into existence, or the stars, according to the Genesis creation myth?

How would this vegetation survive the sub zero frigid conditions without our sun, and exactly what kept the earth in a stable orbit, are two pretty obvious questions that your creation myth seems to have skipped.

As you tie yourself in knots, a very simple explanation that violates nether Occam's razor, or any scientific facts is available, the people who wrote the Genesis creation myth got it wrong.

We survive our sun because it's a finite source that occupies a relatively small chunk of the sky. Light comes in, light goes out, and everything cooks along a smidge above the freezing point of water.

By contrast, sourceless light would come from everywhere and wouldn't be able to go anywhere. Well, not until enough of it accumulated anyway. It would come in and pile up in big drifts. Energy in, no energy out. That would stop once we got hot enough to re-radiate the light, which would happen faster than you might expect. That involves heating the Earth up enough to make it glow like a star though, and that'll have unfortunate side-effects.

But please, continue this hilarious attempt at marrying Bronze Age myth and modern science.
Sounds a bit laser-ish, minus the coherent light.

He is talking/thinking of the very early stages of the universe, where no matter had formed, and no stars existed yet. He thinks this is the saving grace to the completely false creation narrative of his holy book.

He thinks he is smart, like most stupid people. It's very fashionable in these days of anti intellectualism, where any low grade psycho quack can pretend to be smartier than professional and experienced physicists.

More of an EZ-Bake oven cooking along at sun surface temperatures, so you wouldn't have to worry about living for very long.

Like many other Christians, he believes there is another standard for knowledge which believers have access to. It trumps everything else.
