The Omaha Beach landing scene made me think of Spinal Tap's Stonehenge moment, with beach obstacles only 25% of actual size and men towering over them. Cringe-worthy.

I’ve never been one to insist on 100% historical accuracy in films, but yeah - there’s a limit. I recall someone bitching about the casting of Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln, because Lincoln was 6’4”, but Day-Lewis is only 6’2”.

If the producers had cast an albino Chinese dwarf in the role THAT would be a valid complaint. Otherwise, stfu.

Right, I have tolerance for industry needs and time constraints, I get it. But Vichy and American troops having a two-minute firefight and then hugging and dancing on the beach? Yeah, no. The other thing was that the squad's sergeant did about everything. Lead by example is one thing, but no, you have a squad so that you don't have to do everything. Carradine did a job job as the sergeant, and other actors did serviceable work, but the scripting and directing, bleh.

I’m actually a bit more snooty about film adaptations of works of fiction than about ‘historical’ films. I will never forgive Peter Jackson for leaving out Tom Bombadil.

For some characters my love waxes and billows,
but ring-a-ding-dolly I hate Bombadil-o!

Without Bombadil, the quest would have failed. Just saying.

They would have found another way without ye olde Tree-Whisperer. Can you imagine being Goldberry and having to listen to that shit every damned day of your eternal life?

I don’t see how. Tom saved them from Old Man Willow and the barrow wight. Without his help, they never would have made it out of the Old Forest, and Sauron would have recovered the Ring.

Even more importantly, he gave Merry the Numenorean blade he used to stab the Witch King. Turned the whole tide of the war, that did.

And I’m pretty sure Goldberry knew what she was getting into.

They included him in the telly series. Did you see?

Meh, it's fiction. The author can find the way to the end he wants. And did you ever imagine Tom and Goldberry having a great roll in the hay? I might dig my eardrums out with a dull tablespoon.

I watched about 20 minutes of the first episode of that. Never went back.
