I think it's now shown beyond any reasonable doubt that neither have any fucks to give for their constituents. As near as I can tell, we're fucked either way, but the Dems will at least give us flowers.

Jeffries was saying this morning that Dems shouldn't criticize Schumer, that he "fought the good fight".

From where I stand, Schumer spent forty-one days claiming he was defending poor folk and medical care, and then he surrendered. That is not fighting the good fight. That is abject surrender. Anyone who takes this GOP at its word is a fool -- or as you indicate, a tool in the original sense of that word.

He didn't personally surrender, he didn't vote for this, but it's hard to believe that eight senators who are retiring voted with the Republicans without coordinating it with the minority leader.

Meh. It would just be different, less open and obvious BS.

If they're the same, you might as well vote Republican and get the more transparent villainy.

I'm not so sure. America seems to enjoy our peculiar brand of political theater, and if the Dems were in power, the GOP would have even more incentive to shut down the government, in order to prevent the Dems from implementing policies.

By BS I meant a LOT more than the shutdown. I suppose I should have said a lot of the BS wouldn't be happening.

I'm really hoping the vote today for ending the shutdown doesn't go through.

Right, and thanks for the clarification. I don't think there's a perfect equivalence between the two sides, but I think they're quite a bit closer than either side cares to admit.

Sources are headlining "potential end" as though the shutdown isn't officially lifted. Why don't they just tell the truth that it's still ongoing?

Because legally speaking the government is reopened:

Quote:WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump signed a government funding bill Wednesday night, ending a record 43-day shutdown that caused financial stress for federal workers who went without paychecks, stranded scores of travelers at airports and generated long lines at some food banks.

The shutdown magnified partisan divisions in Washington as Trump took unprecedented unilateral actions — including canceling projects and trying to fire federal workers — to pressure Democrats into relenting on their demands.

The Republican president blamed the situation on Democrats and suggested voters shouldn’t reward the party during next year’s midterm elections.

“So I just want to tell the American people, you should not forget this,” Trump said. “When we come up to midterms and other things, don’t forget what they’ve done to our country.”

The signing ceremony came just hours after the House passed the measure on a mostly party-line vote of 222-209. The Senate had already passed the measure Monday.

That the machinery of government will take time to restart is a given, just as with any massive object trying to overcome inertia.
