Wow, I'm vaguely curious to see that... the Buddha's well known for his 'equanimity', but maybe even he's got his limits Wink... having Jesus as a roommate lol (this idea applies more to having a Christian as a roommate than Jesus per se, but hopefully you get the point Wink)

Apparently it was a manga first, and then an anime, and then they made a live-action version. I've only seen clips on YouTube, but it seems to be witty without descending into mockery.

I heard about it from a retired diplomat who lives near me, and she is not someone who enjoys kid stuff. She mentioned it to me because in one episode they refer to paintings by Fra Angelico, who's a favorite of mine and not someone you'd expect to appear in popular media.

There are SO MANY manga, and such a huge range of quality, that I find it very hard to navigate. I was hoping that PepsiMax might be able to guide me a little bit.

For me, I've watched a bit of anime over the years... not a lot but a little... mainly on Netflix. The main thing about it is that it covers all kinds of subjects, often quite mature, unlike cartoons anywhere else. For instance one I saw I think was about a piano player, and was very emotional... can't remember what it was called though. Then more action based, I think I saw some of "Castlevania" and something like "Airbender". Not a huge fan of anime but it definitely has much more potential I think than normal cartoons in other countries, because it's treated as equivalent to real life TV in so many subjects, unlike anywhere else.

Naruto sucks. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

Do you consider the movies of Hayao Miyazaki to be anime? Of course they are animated, but I wonder if anime fans think are they different enough to be in a separate genre?

I ask this because Japanese people will point to his works to argue that some anime are high quality as movies, and are worthwhile for adults who don't normally watch other kinds. But people I know who recommend his movies are people who usually read other kinds of literature as well -- they are far from being otaku.

I've only seen brief clips, but the animation in his movies seems extremely good.

But I guess within the anime world there are different genres, and anime fans may have different criteria than us normies.

Have you seen the series Seinto Oniisan? ("Saint Young Men" in English.) In this show Jesus and the Buddha live together in a small apartment in Tokyo. The joke is that nobody recognizes them, including their nosy landlady, and they deal with little problems of everyday life in Tokyo. I'm told that while this show doesn't deal with any serious religious themes, the writer clearly knows a lot about the background.

But again, I don't know if that show is one that serious anime people like. Sometimes it seems that in Japan you either take the whole anime subculture very seriously, or you don't know it at all.

I wouldn`t say i am a Hayao Miyazaki fan per se. I like three stuff he has done though. "Spirited Away, "Nausicaa Valley of the Wind" and "The Castle of Cagliostro" movie from 1979.  Most of his movies seems to be very... national geographic but turned into anime. Its not exactly stuff i get into is all

Saint Young Men? emm not seen it. Although Japan culturally i find interesting. Since they are majority atheists, but its obvious that Shintosim as a religious culture does play somewhat part of Japan`s daily life there. Princess Mononoke movie somewhat shows that aspect of it, with the whole ideas behind Kamis (Which is good or evil spirits or gods basically). Though i was more into playing Jade Cocoon on PS1 growing over that movie : D
