Where did the Jesus myth come from?
RE: Where did the Jesus myth come from?
FallentoReason,

One question...have you ever read any material by Ron Nash, Jack Finegan, or Gary Habermas?

Curious...

No, I haven't heard of them before. Who are they and what did they write about?

Seriously? And yet you've come to conclusions regarding the historicity of the Gospels, Christ, and other things? How about Craig Blomberg or Paul Barnett?

I'm asking so that I can get a firmer handle on the merits of your case.

What have you read that has given rise to your rejection of the Bible's general historical reliability and authenticity?

Curious...

Where to begin...

The Gospels never claim to be written by eyewitnesses. What's more damning is that Matthew and John, two of Jesus' Apostles, are written in third person i.e. Matthew and John didn't write their Gospels. Mark by default isn't an eyewitness account because he was a disciple of Peter and Luke from the very beginning confesses that he had other texts where he got his information from (Mark and Josephus). As you can see, from the word 'go' we have absolutely no one that ever saw the Son of God for themselves. Paul makes things worse by only ever claiming to see a spiritual Jesus on the way to Damascus. So the luckiest men to live who had direct access to Jesus never say they saw him for themselves. This is only the beginning to understanding the true meaning of the Gospels and the early cults.

There is no need to read apologetic fools like Habermas. The same arguments turn up here, virtually word for word because they are cut and pasted by theistic clowns every so often.

At least scholars like Ehrman try to deal with actual evidence rather than merely regurgitate bible bullshit to impress the dolts who buy their books.

SO the Jesus myth was invented by Gary Habermas?

Ok.. let me give you some historical perspective on why a physical Jesus is highly unlikely:

Josephus is the only historian that mentions Jesus just after he lived, making him the prime candidate for some evidence. Now, if Jesus was real and Josephus did write those two passages in his works, why did the early church Fathers never quote it? In fact, the floodgates of mass quoting opened up 300 years later after the time of Eusebus, a Christian historian living in the 4th century A.D.

Just a simple observation... Son of God. An observant Jew confesses his divinity. 300 year gap where early Christians 'ignore' it. Christian historian lives. What do you know, Josephus the historian from the very beginning acknowledged Jesus was a person. OR.... was it forged in the 4th century A.D?

I see all of this as a game of probability. What is the probability that what I have outlined is true i.e. that Josephus genuinely wrote about Jesus? Well, considering all the odd events like a 300 year gap, I'd say pretty unlikely. So the game is about increasing the probabilities as high as you can, and the only way to do that is by erasing a historical Jesus from our minds. Given the circumstances, what's the probability that Eusebus edited Josephus' work 300 years later? Very very high.

Craig Blomberg and Paul Barnett, plus maggie from the down the road. The other Jesus spoke to her, and told her to cut off her baby's arms!!
