What do we feed cows, chickens and pigs? Exclamation

Livestock does actually help to sequester and condense more carbon than vegetable production -assuming it is done in a reasonable manner- as always. It's also an effective way to convert various sources of energy (though all, ultimately solar) into a source of energy useful for human beings.

@ Nora, often those things which we cannot personally process, or that which we feel to be unfit for human consumption, though by no means always. No one (besides florida growers) is dumping truckloads of tomatoes in their livestock enclosure. As an amusing aside, florida growers actually do precisely this, by doing doughnuts in dumptrucks full of tomatoes with the gates open...and let me just say, watching a herd of cattle chase a dumptruck in a psuedo wagon train- priceless.

Thor's post reads rather tongue-in-cheek. Tongue

Especially the "what do vegetables produce"?

Easy. Produce. Tongue

Yes Diamond, people who eat vegetables are contributing to global warming, by and large. Yes, even the ones who go organic, buy from sustainable farms, or choose to source their food from the local Co-Op. Unless you're growing cucumbers in piles of your own shit, which is made of cucumbers - that you grew in piles of your own shit (and even then there will be a point where you require added oomph) - and eating them directly off the vine, which is in your yard........and this comprises the entirety of your diet..... the things that you eat contribute to global warming

Quote:What do cows,and pigs produce?

Both produce massive amounts of methane.

Do I care? Of course, but not enough to stop eating meat. Would I still eat meat if I had to kill the animal myself? Of course, I'm a human being, and we are omnivores and predators.

Quote:Agriculture is responsible for an estimated 14 percent of the world's greenhouse gases. A significant portion of these emissions come from methane, which, in terms of its contribution to global warming, is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization says that agricultural methane output could increase by 60 percent by 2030 [Source: Times Online]. The world's 1.5 billion cows and billions of other grazing animals emit dozens of polluting gases, including lots of methane. Two-thirds of all ammonia comes from cows

We should tap that shit and run our vehicles on the gas! Imagine airtight pig farms with filters to purify the methane and pumps to compress the methane into usable canisters then shipped around the world on methane powered boats, planes, and trucks!

Bacon can solve the world energy crisis! QED

A pig produces over 600 pounds of methane a day,

Decomposing plant matter also produces methane -which, case in point, is where the methane the cows and pigs are "producing" comes from (in truth they're processing, not producing). Given that the portion of the plant that you consume is usually less than 10% (and not so for livestock, they eat root shoot seed and flower) the methane is a byproduct of either, and less wasteful when the animal is fed plant matter than when human beings are. Ammonia is a potent and valuable source of ammonium nitrite and nitrate, ala nitrogen, the largest nutrient requirement for commercial agricultural production (and of course, the largest contributor -aside from oil- to much of the damage cause by agriculture due to toxicity in some cases, and blooms or other effects in others). It's also the basis of the nitrogen cycle -a cycle which early all life on earth depends upon-. Thankfully, we are better at extracting this nitrogen than the cycles of nature can hope to be, and so our processed fertilizers go farther with less (as opposed to dumping manure, filled with piss, that's why bull manure is worthless -his dangle points away from his pooper- on our crops).

It's a tangled web.
