Ban forced religious studies in schools

Oh? My atheist parents forced me to take a scripture class? A scripture class that had no option for one to be removed? (I was there, you weren't. Remember that.)

Quote:Religions or schools have no legal power to force anyone to do anything.

Sure, I could leave the lesson just as much as I could leave my math lessons, sure. But education is kind of compulsory, and the government doesn't take kindly to truancy.

As usual, I have posted only known facts, while you have only sought to blame religion for why you resent your parents!

Parents were atheist, they wouldn't have forced me to attend a religious class of the option was presented to them. And I don't resent my parents either, but hey, thanks for speaking for me! I sure love that! /sarcasm.

I had RE at my school and I didn't mind it. They aren't forcing religion on you, they are teaching you about many religions and the differences between them. No harm done.

I am of the opinion that religious instruction is best served via the churches and has NO PLACE in public schools.

ALL chaplains supplied by various religious groups should not have tax exemptions or failing THAT should include ethics classes (which are more interesting and don't involve grovelling to a deity)

That isn't how religious education is here. It is a proper teacher that takes the class. You get taught about various religions of the world. There is no forcing any particular religion on you. It is simply about learning about what beliefs are out there. I don't see any problem with that. It is also an optional class after a couple of years at high school.

Funding is drying up here in OZ for "proper teachers to take Ethics classes" thank you our Labor govt! Angry

Where "religious" classes get funding, Ethics classes do NOT! Sorry state of affairs from our current PM (not for long) Angry

Dat sucks. Our classes were actually called Religious and Moral Education. Most of it is actually just about morality. Tongue

The teachers at my school who ran the RE classes were the Philosophy teachers.

Not so here in Oz frankiej. Rather backward imho; and in mimicry of the religious right of the USoA.

It annoys me when politicians mess around with people's education.

Our current Pm and her ministry seem to think they have the franchise on education in this country. They really are not as educated as they like to think they are imho. And NONE are qualified in the area of education, accounting, financial management (which I have studied) or anything else that would constitute the running of a government.

Can't wait 'til September.

Russell Kirk writes about the tyranny of reason, and the foolish, prideful attitude which causes men to exalt their petty schemes over the collective voice of history. I think he is right. Of course reason is valuable, but people that are well educated must always have a sense of their past and their place in the human predicament, which cannot be understood solely in math and engineering terminology. Nor is it all religious, but understanding religion is an important part of understanding what it means to be human.
