It doesn't make sense literally because of the numerous contradictions that sort of reading spawns e.g. two creation accounts. But then a metaphorical reading doesn't work because of the apparent intricate relationship between the OT and NT e.g. the genealogy from Adam to Jesus. Surely the genealogy isn't from metaphorical man to literal man? Therefore, a literally reading seems to be the most logical... as far as "logical" goes with the Bible.

Bolded by me to highlight the hilarious logic applied by fundie atheists.

Seriously? It doesn't make sense literally so therefore the literal reading is the most logical??? Who taught you about logic?
.

Catfish, there's a secret technique passed down from one atheist to another, a powerful observational magic imparted from teacher to student only in the dead of night and only once the student has completed certain rites. Only then will they be given this advanced skill, called...

"Reading the fucking sentences in between the bits that have been bolded."

Seriously, must you devolve to this level, even when the rest of the paragraph is plainly seen? Do you not understand that something can still be illogical from top to bottom and still have an interpretation that is more logical than another? That there are degrees of wrongness, and though the bible may be wrong altogether, interpreting it literally is at least slightly less wrong than the piecemeal, partial metaphor version most theists advocate?

Are you doing this on purpose?

Snore.

You got anything original to say, or would you just like to highlight your poor reading comprehension again?

The Quoran is the true word of Allah, the Bible is complete bullshit. Islam is true.

Now prove me wrong.

Please, elaborate on your "degrees of wrongness" and then explain how finding something that makes no sense equates to the most logical interpretation.

Well, say I have an orange. It's wrong to call that orange an apple. That's factually, demonstrably wrong.

But it's much, much more wrong to call that orange a suspension bridge.

Both claims are incorrect, but the apple claim is more logical because at least it's in the same ballpark; at least an apple is a fruit. It's possible to pick from two incorrect options and still have one be closer to being correct than the other.

In this specific case, the literal reading of the bible is still wrong, but it's more internally consistent than the metaphorical reading. This ain't hard.

The Scriptures tell us that much of it is metaphorical and that they contain deep and profound mysteries not readily apparent from its literal meaning:

Quote:"I will open my mouth in a parable : I will utter dark sayings of old, which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us." Psalm 78:2,3
Quote:“I have also spoken to the prophets, and gave numerous visions; And through the prophets I gave parables." Hosea 12:10
Quote:“To whom would He teach knowledge? And to whom would He interpret the message? Those just weaned from milk? Those just taken from the breast? For He says, ‘Order on order, order on order, line on line, line on line, a little here, a little there.’” Indeed He will speak to this people through stammering lips and a foreign tongue.” Isaiah 28:9-11
Quote:“And he was returning and sitting in his chariot, and was reading the prophet Isaiah. And the Spirit said to Philip, ‘Go up and join this chariot.’ So Philip had to run up, and he heard him reading Isaiah the prophet, and said, ‘do you understand what you are reading?’ And he said, ‘Well, how could I unless someone guides me?’” Acts 8:26-31

Without your straw man you have nothing to rail against.

And yet, FTR picked the suspension bridge and you're supporting that choice, go figure... Undecided

Sooo... the best that can be done is throw everything up in the air and shrug our shoulders?

From my experience, simpler truths in life are straight forward and don't require such mysterious riddles to work out. Perhaps the ghosts of 2000 years ago are pulling your leg?

I'm not an atheist.

Considering that your reading comprehension left you thinking I was an atheist, I can see why you're trying to pull off such an absurd argument.

If the Bible is a book of metaphors, why should anybody read it for anything except pleasure? A book of metaphors may make for interesting reading, but as a reference or a guidebook, it is worthless. Each person who reads it with that approach will take from it exactly what they want, which is, of course, precisely what happens with the Bible.

Reading it literally is the only way to remove ambiguity. Of course, that leads to even bigger problems, as is well-documented.
