Mind = Brain?

RE: Mind = Brain?
Agreed, brain contains the arrangments needed for a mind, thus containing a mind.

And now we know.
And knowing is half the battle.

I agree you mind is contained entirely within the brain.

And your brain has many useful functions. Smile

Depends on how we are defining 'mind'...

A synthetic intelligence wouldn't have an organic 'brain', per see... but it could quite easily have a 'mind'...

The CPU and Organic brain are interchangeable in that case.

Mind is really self explanatory is it not? I'm not sure how you could define any confusion into it.

Oh good Smile In that case I'd say that a mind can't exist without a brain Smile

A person who believes in a 'spiritual mind' (however wrongly) is still defining it like that... so that would put some confusion into the definition. I am confused by wether we mean 'mind' as in personality and intelligence... 'mind' as in a poetic way to refer to the thinking aspect(s) of a brain... 'mind' in a retarded 'spiritual?' sense... or even 'mind' in reference to our ability to perceive... :S

I can see many ways to understand the 'mind'... but just which are we talking about here? Smile

Pay attention to your thinking for several seconds and you will know what i mean by mind.

Then we are using 'mind' in reference to our ability to think? Smile

In which case i think it to be interesting that Mr. fr0d0 thinks that a 'spirit' can have a mind without having a brain Smile A mind is based upon a brain (or equivalent)... does a spirit have a brain, fr0d0? Or are you considering the 'soul' to be exactly what a 'mind' is, fr0d0?

When you are aware of a thought you are demonstrating far more than just thought alone. First you need the thought it's self, then you need perception to be able to define it as a thought, you need imagination to conceptualize the thought, you need memory to store the thought, you need willpower to retrieve specifically that thought memory, reason to define a meaningful context for the thought, all of which will stir some level of emotional reaction. Thinking about your thoughts leads to a fairly encompassing example.

??? To begin the thought itself... you require every part of the process (brain). There are no thoughts floating around in the air around me... only in brains (and equivalents) can thoughts occur Tongue

I mean... try to digest a pizza when you are missing your stomach, or your intestines, or your mouth? That just doesn't work Tongue You need an environment that can support a process before that process can exist... like tell me gravity exists without the universe?. Its like saying that mathematics exist as 'thoughts' outside of the brain... which just doesn't make any sense because thoughts require the brain to exist. Smile

*facepalm*

My example was the easiest demonstration of the mind working i could think of, to demonstrate what i was talking about as defined mind and what that encompasses, not the chronological order for it's evolution or implementation.

Since you clearly missed the point i don't think responding to this other than to say it's a dreadful analogy is worthwhile.
