Democrats Catering to Religious Right?
July 8, 2013 at 9:14 pm
(This post was last modified: July 8, 2013 at 10:53 pm by Michael Schubert.)
This afternoon, I came across a disturbing story in this month's issue of Free Thought Today:
The Colorado Supreme Court announced May 10 that it will hear an appeal by Gov. John Hickenlooper of the Freedom From Religion Foundation's solid appeals court victory declaring unconstitutional the governor's annual Colorado Day of Prayer proclamations.
Hickenlooper and his predecessors, including Gov. Bill Ritter, annually issue proclamations encouraging Coloradans to pray on the first Thursday in May in conjunction with the National Day of Prayer.
Now...the National Day of Prayer is arguably the dumbest holiday ever to be put forth by the government. Why the hell do we need an established national day to pray? Under powers delegated to us by the U.S. Constitution, we are allowed to express our religion basically however we want. We can pray any time at any place, whether it is in the church, the privacy of your own home, or practically anyplace else; as long as the government is not leading you in prayer. Under the 1st Amendment, the government may not promote religion.
But what is especially frightening about this story: Governors Hickenlooper and Ritter are both Democrats. The people who brought us this stupid National Day of Prayer were the Republican Party's Christian Dominionist Church of Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and Bryan Fischer. Post-1980, practically all Republican politicians were promulgating lies about America's Christian heritage. Sarah Palin is the one who immediately comes to mind.

But now that the Democrats are apparently catering to the Christian right and their campaign to build a master race of Christians, I am scared out of my mind. I already abandoned the Democratic party after I realized they were corporatists just like the Republicans, but this is appalling!

Most people fail to realize that in the grand scheme of politics, Democrats are exactly the same as Republicans, for both parties cater to corporations. From my experience, Democrats have also never been less religious than Republicans, though perhaps they have been less vocal about it. There should be a separation of church and state, but anyone who follows politics understands that there is no such thing, especially when the politicians lend their ear to the religious right more than they should in matters that do not concern the theists whatsoever. The drama with politics is one reason I do not vote. There is an illusion that voting accomplishes something, when in actuality it is a mere pageantry for the nation to think it is doing something in the grand scheme of building a supposedly better country.

Do you really think that is necessary? Ad Hominem attacks such as that are usually a good indication you are losing the argument.

You are correct that voting does not accomplish much. But in your opinion how can we necessarily build a better country?

These terms, right and left, must be measured against each other. By European standards, Obama is a rightist.
Compared to the fascist psychos we have over here he is a leftist. He is no where near far enough to the left to suit my tastes but my other choice was Mitt (the Shit) Romney....and that's no choice at all.

Read his other posts. You will sooner or later notice that he is a hopeless communist radical who abuses every story he can find to push his agenda, regardless of facts.
And to me only facts matter, and not how you can abuse and reinterpret them.
To the subject itself. Seeing how Americas demographics are changing and how the public is becoming more and more liberal - it would be suicidal for the democrats to pounder to the right.
From where I am, it seems as if the republicans (at least the reasonable ones) are poundering to the left. One example given by the press here is Chris Christie.
From my point of view, the democrats are not in need to pounder to anyone since their base is stable and they have the image of being the only reasonable people left.
It is the republicans who are in need of a reasonable image.

Well, in a state like New Jersey, you cannot be too right wing to have a successful political career. Christie just barely beat incumbent Jon Corzine in 2009, who was very unpopular because of the state's high property taxes, and a representative of Goldman Sachs. I read about that election quite a bit, and Christie had basically campaigned as a moderate who had washed New Jersey clean of corrupt politicians and embezzlers as a federal prosecutor. But do you really think he is pandering to the left? He has a 74% approval rating because he did such a good job of getting the Garden State evacuated and cleaned up after Hurricane Sandy. How does that put him out in left field?
In regards to the communist allegations, can you please elaborate on how this individual is a communist? Does he want to take away our houses and nationalize farms? Does he want the government to own everything, including your toothbrush?

There are photos of Christie hugging Obama. That will ruin his chances with the right in the US.
"He hugged a WHAT!!!"
What is disguised is that Christie is a 'love the rich - fuck the working classes' type of scumbag.

I guess I will have to correct myself in this regard and accept your version as the right one.
It seems that in todays american political arena, talking and shaking hands with a democrat makes a republican a leftist or poundering to the left.
Which shows how much the tea party fucked the political arena.
I guess I can simply say that he is a reasonable person who appeals to the reasonable middle.

hat the state has the right to tell you where you can live, where to work and almoust everything. He thinks North Korea is an awsome place which is supirior to South Korea. He also believes in conspiracy theories and watches Iranian state propaganda TV. And to him every newssource other than Iranian TV is propaganda.
And if you disagree with him in a debate, he will simply accuse you of being a nazi.
I dont think there is a member on this forum whom he hasn`t accused of being a nazi yet.
