When you're assigning values to someone that is not immediately apparent.

In other words, if I say A, and you think i'm a bad person because A is a very bad thing to say, then you're ok. If I say A, and you think i must think B, C, D, E, F, and therefore am a bad person, then you're unproductively judgmental, because you judged too soon, now you won't know what I really think, or if i'm really a bad person.

If you don't judge someone for something you've assumed about them, it's generally alright.

Right. I kind of got you until the last sentence.

Let's say for example, 10 young black men wearing gang visuals, baseball caps, hooded tops, tattoos, etc. Came toward me alone in a park, would it be incorrect to assume them to be dangerous?

Or on the other end, if someone black is down in a southern state and a bunch of people wearing KKK costumes comes round the corner, would it be wrong for him to assume these people to be negative and dangerous?

Or if someone Jewish was approached by a skinhead looking angry with a swastika on his forehead, would it be wrong for that Jew to assume this person to be negative and/or dangerous?

These are extreme examples, but you get the point.

It seems completely counter productive and frankly dangerous to have a 'no assumption' rule.

you're nitpicking. that's not being judgmental, that's self-preservation, which errs on the side of caution at all times. when i'm walking home alone on an empty street at night, one man walking behind me is all it takes for me to reach for my phone. i believe the word used for that kind of behaviour is paranoia, not judgmental.

the kind of things i was talking about in my previous post applies to when you're getting to know someone.

Mmmmm, now you are calling a healthy sense of self preservation paranoia which is neurotic insanity. I don't mean to give the impression of nit picking, this is what you are saying.

Yeah, It is definitely preferable to ask questions.

I am very curious about why people think the way they think, how their childhood was, what makes them tick etc.

But on the other hand, it is kind of that person's responsibility to make clear that they are good, and to not let people's assumptions paint a negative picture.

If I go into a job interview with a bank wearing a track suit- I can't really claim that it was totally unexpected when I don't get the job.

You can not logically criticize someone for being judgemental, since that in effect is a judgement and generalisation of someone else's personality. This is a fail of logic on the most basic level.

It's like someone saying "You should not use English", well then you have failed your own objective, so why should I listen to you?

The only reason why people have a problem with judgement, is not from any genuine reasoned argument, but just that they don't like what you are saying, so they will try to shut you up by ... judging you negatively!

Personally I love my sense of judgement, it separates my friends from enemies very quickly.

Discuss.

this is damn near poetic.

it's religion that tells us to judge is bad so i would give judging credit just for that.

When does it become unproductive or too much?

When hypocrisy is ignorant.

don't evolving people judge everything around them and those judgments change over time or evolve?

hypocrisy is always an issue, as long as you have the fortitude to identify it in yourself and change accordingly its not a big deal. other peoples judgments of us help us to evolve too, even if they are d-bags about it sometimes.

my opinion.

Judgmental is not the same as intolerant.

Its not a fail of logic because I never said that nobody should be judgmental. I'm simply telling you not to be judgmental while consider me being judgmental is just fine. Its not even hypocritical because I never claimed to be non-judgmental myself.

Look up the definition of the word. Being judgmental means "Having or displaying an excessively critical point of view". So, while you are being judgmental by being excessively critical, me simply saying that you are being judgmental and should not be is simply stating the facts. Thus - non-judgmental.

Hence, 'or'.
