why don't atheists support scientology?

So you have nothing there at all and nothing happens to it and then the universe appears for no reason and life begins because it just does and then it all eventually becomes nothing again and that's it?

If you don't want to believe in the "Christian God" as you call then believe something else as long as you're believing in God you're on the right track, seeing as God most certainly does exist. If you would prefer to do a bit of this.

Or a bit of this (ugh)

Then you that's fine as well. I'd argue Christianity is better and has a little bit more evidence but personal choice. Avoid anything like Scientology, at least the Church of Scientology as it's essentially a criminal organisation and ought to be banned.

Quite possibly. The truth may not always be pleasant, but that doesn't make it any less true. If it's true that there is a god out there who will torment unbelievers forever, it doesn't matter that I find that to be an utterly contemptible and illogical concept. By the same token, if it turns out that there is no god and no grand and great "purpose" to the universe, then it doesn't matter that it might make anyone feel a bit empty to contemplate it.

Einstein's theory of gravitation replaced Newton's in this century, but apples didn't suspend themselves in midair, pending the outcome. And humans evolved from ape- like ancestors whether they did so by Darwin's proposed mechanism or by some other yet to be discovered."

Atheism/naturalism is a philosophy someone made up that's the thing.

No, not at all. Atheism is simply the lack of belief in any gods. What part of that can these religious folk not understand? It is not a philosophy, that would be something separate. I could be an atheist and an existentialist, or an atheist and a nihilist, or any thing whatever. It's pretty simple. What gives?Undecided

I don't need science to be an atheist. I can stay simple and ask you: Show me that god of yours is real and given its supposed 'greatness' he could appear, or can't he? I can show you to make fire, why don't you as a theist man up and put some substance in your words?

So, my golden calf is a lack of evidence?

You seem to be under the delusion that everyone suffers from the same mental deficiencies that require you to think that there is a "place of god" in their minds. You seek definitive answers regardless of their validity. I seek the truth, and the truth is we don't know a lot about life and the universe. I am comfortable with the unknown, so I have no need for a golden calf.

okay im sorry guys i will stop going there, I was pretty sad with all the harsh comments so i thought i'd quit forum, but reading through i guess maybe you guys are right and just trying to help me.

So thats okay i'll stop the scientology, i will pickup that "epistmotology" the german guy recommended a few pages back.

so what should i do now? i'm reading through but i feel like i have no purpose in life. The guy at scientology said being a scientologist changes everything. for example when a regular person walks by a guy who got hurt, he may say a prayer for him or ignore him...but when a scientologist walks by, he knows that he has to stop and help, because he is the only one who can! and that made me feel like life was worht living.

but if u guys think its all a scam ill becoming a epistemologist.

It is a scam. I suggest you do some serious research into ex-scientologists and their claims. Stop worrying about what you should become and who is going to lead you to the answers. Examine the evidence around you and go where your intuition leads you.

You are free, to pursuit whatever you wish, don't mind us some random people on the internet. Study scientology hard, and the harder you study it the faster you will realize its just a scam.

I think they misspelled "Samaritan" there.

I didn't say it would be, what's the point of salvation if there isn't something unpleasant in our nature? The reality of death and suffering in this is unpleasant as well no faith will take that reality away. But if you're laying in the gutter you chose to look up at the stars or lay face down in the shit. You aim yourself toward heaven not into the ground.

Quote:

They will torment themselves. If someone truly rejects God, truly hates his works and humanity and rejoices in their sins then Gods love for them will burns like a fire. You can see hell as dark shadowy realm or state where such beings go to try and hide away from his sight. Certainly fits with Biblical description as Jesus describes it.

I'd be a bit careful there, Pascals Wager may be complete balls but try not to find the ultimate source of the universe, everything that is good in humanity the force of love, humility and justice contemptible even if you can't believe in it's reality. Try to at least like the idea, live as Jesus or Buddha or whoever would, try not to be a cunt.

It will still matter greatly to other people even you apparently don't care either way. If you like the idea of being a lumbering robot whose only purpose is to serve as a vehicle for the DNA that controls it as Dawkins put it then you can believe that. It doesn't mean you're right or have any particularly good arguments though.
