On a different note, I work with an American Muslim girl here in Kiwiland, and she's one of the nicest, smartest people I've ever met. She describes herself as a cultural or modern Muslim. She believe in the basic tenets of the religion, prays (but not every day), has an occasional drink and lives just like a regular person you would expect from California. She says she lives by her religion but doesn't believe in any of that "12th century tribal bullshit".
 I knew you'd find that thought irresistible.  who'd want to be a well dressed, career minded, well educated surfing biker chick when they could instead volunteer for a lifetime of servicing their husband whenever he demands it.
I strongly suspect that Muslims, like Christians, exist on a spectrum with sensible folk like your mate at One end and Batshit crazy inbred fuckwits with raging penile insecurity at the other.
