The news networks reported him as being "flabbergasted" when JC didn't turn up though; and according to reports like this one "Donations to his ministry dropped noticeably after that, and Family Radio was forced to sell several of its most powerful FM stations to stay afloat financially."

Even if he was being less than sincere with his apology, I think the fact that he came out and admitted his failures ought to be an object lesson to the 80% or so of Americans who believe exactly what he preached, but who realise that it makes their belief look silly by being too specific with a date.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist.  This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair.  Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second.  That means there's a situation vacant.'

I didn't believe Harold Camping when he said that he would refrain from predicting the end of the world. I bet he's been at it with a Bible and a calculator since 2011 figuring it out. Predicting the end of the world was what Camping did. For him it was a compulsion -- he did it because he HAD to.

He was mentally ill.
A mind is a terrible thing to waste -- don't pollute it with bullshit.

Well, he's probably given it up now.

Well I for one beg to differ on the stupid part, as he was a very successful con man, and found anyway to make off like a thief while never having to fear arrest or imprisonment. Clever I say atleast, though I'm glad he is dead and I hope billy and franklin graham join him soon. Oh and Holy shit Harold is ugly.

I remember listening to him and thinking that he was genuine in what he thought - but obviously an idiot. The scam-artists are usually much vaguer in their predictions - doomsday is coming but we don't know exactly when kind of thing.

I seem to recall that once the original date passed he came up with a new one that was about 6 months later - anyone else remember that?

Anyway eventually he did have to admit he was completely wrong.

Entertaining whilst it lasted though....
