At the time of the writing, slavery was socially acceptable. No surprise there.

Not at all. Exactly the reason I don't look to the bible for guidance. Superstitious goat herders in the middle east didn't know some mystical truth about my life any more than I do, so I'll keep their version of life's principles out of my life and try not to kill anyone in the process.

That wouldn't be growth that would be given knowledge, he tried giving us everything once, we chose our own way, he's content to let us do it our way, and grow on our own, we'll eventually end up on the same page hopefully.
Are you referring to Adam and Eve? Do you believe that was a literal account? And should the whole of humanity be punished for the action of what one person did (not to mention God knew it was going to happen?)
Every single invention and development in the world has been due to the principle of doubt and curiosity. We grow on our own, but not because someone was nice enough to let us grow on our own. Especially someone who apparently lets us grow, but demands we acknowledge him and his almighty power without any evidence.

Maybe one that leaves at the beginning and pays child support with checks that bounce.

No I don't believe adam and eve was a literal count. My point was that humanity continues to repeat the same decision daily in modern times. No no one should be punished for "their father's mistakes" or inherited sin. You don't go to hell (wth that is) for what you don't do, but for what you do. I was referencing the father to one that allows his kids the freedom they seek at 18-20 to to learn on their own.
He knows you can't learn through listening, only through experience.

In that case I don't think you've read your bible, since it never says anything like that.

Really... as much as I hate quoting the OT
A.(Deuteronomy 24:16) - "Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin."
B.(Ezekiel 18:20) - "The person who sins will die. The son will not bear the punishment for the father’s iniquity, nor will the father bear the punishment for the son’s iniquity; the righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself."

Exodus 20:5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;
Numbers 14:8 Visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation.
Isaiah 14 :21 Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers.
Oh wait this is one of those places where the bible didnt mean what it said... I betcha

I'm very aware that I'm picking and choosing. It would be impossible to take literally everything of the bible. He simply stated that the bible didn't say that when in fact it does. I didn't say it didn't say the opposite as well. Personally I feel the verses you quoted were talking about family structure. Mine were more in the "rules section" of the Bible. I'm far too tired to banter anymore tonight though

It's just more examples of Biblical contradictions...more evidence that the Bible shouldn't (or to be more accurate...can't) be taken literally. Also more evidence it wasn't written by a God...though maybe he was incompetent?

At this point I'm pretty sure if there is a God and he commanded the writing of the Bible, it was one huge practical joke on humanity.
There's a reception in Hell with a banner for all Christians saying "SURPRISE, DUMBASS!"

I've heard it said never take anything as 'gospel' that isn't mentioned at least twice

The sky is falling. The sky is falling.
Truth.
