All Hail the Second Amendment

Fair enough.

It's a crappy thing to do because there is no good reason for it and only bad reasons for it.

It would be nice to have every gun that criminals own to be registered but do you think they will comply?

For the rest of the population that are law abiding good folks it only gives the government the ability to tax or confiscate them. There is no useful reason to register them. It will not reduce crime. It will do nothing positive.

It sounds like criminals that already have guns won't comply. That's a fair assessment. But law abiding citizens will, correct? Before someone becomes a criminal, they are first a law-abiding criminal...unless a person is born into organized crime, which shouldn't be a consideration. Hmmm...

Anyway, thanks. I've got nothing against guns personally, but once I heard about gun registries, I felt I needed to hear both sides of the issue. I'm not yet convinced they're a bad thing, but I can see your concern. Paying unnecessary fees can get one a little annoyed, sure, but you don't think it would be an extra deterrent to keep a gun owner from commuting a felony with said firearm?

No. Even the death penalty doesn't lower the homocide rate. I can't imagine how having your gun registered would stop anyone from using it to kill if they are already so past the point of reason or self control to not commit such a crime.

If I have to pay taxes on something it means I really don't own it. Don't pay your property tax and the government will eventually take your house from you. If this was my gun then it would infringe on my right to own it. This makes it more than an annoying unnecessary fee.

As to the registration of my firearms being a deterrent I don't see how it could be. If I had a rifle that was registered and I was a dipshit that wanted to shoot someone like that DC sniper did years ago how would the registration deter me? I would still be able to do it and they would have no idea who's registered rifle the bullet came out of.

I am obviously pro gun and pro 2A but I am also sick to my stomach that dirtbags commit heinous crimes with them. The fact that there are dirbags out there is the primary reason I want a gun myself. I want to have the opportunity to even the odds to protect my family. Even if they don't have a gun there may be a group of thugs that want to hurt me or mine. This happened recently to a local man where I live. He pulled his pistol out and they ran off. He didn't fire a shot.

A "criminal" is one one who chooses to violate the codified rules of a society, so as soon as one "chooses" to place oneself above the laws and to have an attitude that lacks social empathy, one could call them a criminal despite them having not yet performed the act.

How did the idea of a registry even come up? What's the underlying issue? (And I don't believe for a second that it's because people want to take away your guns...and if it is, then those people should obviously stop projecting their personal issues onto others via legislation.)

I think he means where did the idea of a registry for guns in general come from. Not who mentioned it in this thread first.

Your responses are exactly why I get fed up trying to discuss this stuff. Your 'Murica attitude is fucking childish.

Yes, I mentioned it first on this thread, but I am talking about its origin in general. If you don't know the reasons FOR it, then your reasons against it will only come across as knee-jerk-reactionary. If you don't like having to pay an extra tax, that's understandable, and that's probably as far as your argument can take you.

In the meantime, I'm trying to figure out why states would need a gun registry in the first place. My best bet is that it has to do with oversight. States are more concerned about CYA (cover yer ass) policies than taking away your rights and your belongings. That's why there are car registries and even pet registries. If this is a bad idea, besides a small taxation and confiscation due to mishandling, then what's the beef?
