Have you offered to take a pay cut to say, janitorial wages?

Or offered to give a portion of your pay to a janitor so that the two of you have the same amount of money?

It's the other way round: I advocate a raising of wages for those in roles with lower salary bandings. There's enough money in the salary pot, most of it is given to executive & upper management.

But if I could afford it, I would. I put my money where my mouth is.

In a way, yes. During the last financial crisis, I was one of those in my company who lobbied for pay-freezes for middle-band staff (like myself) in order to reduce the number of redundancies amongst the operational staff (typically lower-band staff such as call-centre workers).

I do what I can when I'm able.

As Kusa said, then, why aren't you giving a percentage of your pay to those in the lower echelons, in order to level things out a bit?

Further, I note that you advocated a pay freeze, not an actual pay cut. I don't mean to be rude, but you're coming off like a great, steaming pile of hypocrisy.

When I managed a team, I did. Right now, I'm not in a management role therefore I have no direct ability to handle salaries. Also I simply can't afford to.

In the UK, it's the same thing. Our inflation and cost-of-living increases mean that if you're not increasing your salary by ~4% per annum, you're taking a pay cut. Once again, I'm not earning enough that I can afford to give up my salary but I do what I can when I can.

Why? I work towards closing (ultimately eliminating) the gap between earning-levels because the evidence shows that's likely to be a more workable model of capitalism than the current one. My ability to act freely on that information is not an indicator of its veracity.

Ben Davis' salary is most likely about six feet north of the janitors while being a mile south of the executives of the financial companies he works for. To hell with cutting his pay. Both he and the janitor should be making more than they do.

If people want to make more money they should do the jobs that pay more. If you want to get payed like an executive then be one.
