What do the colours mean anyway? I get what green and red means, but there seem to be two shades of red and then there's purple.

Purple are donators, violet is a colour only assigned to one user. For the reasons for that, you should dwelve deep into the forum archive. In 6 & 1/2 years there is probably more written than in the whole middle age. 
People with purple names are donors, and I'm pretty sure Nazi Red is the only shade we use for Admins, so that everybody knows who to heil.
