It's Angels in America, the Angel is Emma Thompson, and yes, the wings are supposed to look artificial, and the strings are supposed to be visible, if the author's notes of the published editions of the original plays are any indication. For what it's worth, it also starts with Meryl Streep playing a (male) Orthodox rabbi. Yeah.

i saw this woman on Miami ink. She had a piece of half eaten toast which she said had the image of the virgin mary on it. She wanted it tatooed on her back! Amazing. Just looked like a piece of toast to me. I did larf
