When Your Kids Make You Feel Old
#21
RE: When Your Kids Make You Feel Old
I make my kids watch the same cartoons I watched when I was a kid... and they love it! Which keeps me young at heart! Smile And shows just how good cartoons were in the 80's!

Then, there's the kid that, at 11, asks me to get him a mobile phone... a smartphone... I was 19 when I got my first phone, it was one of these:

Things that make me feel old:

Using 4 of these to install Doom.

Going to Sam Goody in the mall to buy music in a longbox.

Talking with someone about the feeling of utter triumph when you were trying to get on AOL at peak hours and you fucking did. You fucking did! 28.8k baby! The blank stare breaks my heart.

When kids these days don't relate to:
The smell of a Koosh ball.
The sound of a dialup modem.
Cleaning the schmegma out of a mouse with a ball.
Fucking scantrons at school.
Not going with the man and using the foil hole on the Capri sun. Flip that bitch and punch it through the bottom.

I was 34 when I had my first one. That's when they started to become affordable. And it still was a brick that only carried enough juice for 8 hours standby or so.

Yeah, the first time my son really made me feel old was when he asked me what computer I learnt on -- a Commodore PET, like this one:

"What's that thing on the side, Dad?"
"That's the tape drive."
"Tape deck? Why did it have a tape deck?"
"No, tape drive. Kind of like a disk drive, only it used magnetic tape, a cassette, instead of a disk."
"Wow, I bet that could store a lot."
"No, it held about 20 K per side."
"20 K? [laughs] How much memory did it have?"
"Uh, 4 K Ram, and BASIC stored in ROM."
"4 K?! [loud laughter] What year was that, Dad, 1931?!"

My first one was an Apple Mcintosh Plus

More luxurious than the one in the picture. It had an external hard drive that held 20 MBs and had 1 MB memory. I still have it stored for future generations.

The old datasette.

Yikes. Glad I missed that stage. My earliest days with computers were the old Macintosh IIc with Shufflepuck on it.
Memories, memories.

At 19 I would have been asking "How do I plug that in to the phone jack."

This was state of the art when I was 19:
