I'm not sure what retention has to do with it. Can you explain?
Missouri is just an example state that has complete legal authority to create laws related to how records are retained, and they can also audit the records. The government can also make rules about how hospitals keep records. The US government cannot make rules about how religious records are kept and they cannot audit religious records effectively.
The reason we have rules and audit the records is to prevent fraud.

Well, then, to me, there's a much bigger problem than being able to produce religious records to obtain a passport. I don't appreciate that any entity has the right to view anyone's records without the express permission of the person himself.
I'm going to have to research this...

The government is not going to ask for your permission. Have you been paying attention to the NSA stories?

Of course; and I have a big problem with it.

But there shouldn't be any controversy with the government auditing public school records since they run the public schools. There also shouldn't be a problem with the government auditing hospital records since that information is important to the CDC. The government should be involved in the health care industry much more than it is now.

I'm unaware of any massive, nefarious scheme by which churches are going to overthrow the US government by falsifying baptismal records.

What does that have to do with anything? I am not arguing that the churches are going to overthrow the US government. I think you just made a straw man argument.

'First off, all religions are treated equal so we are not just trusting the Catholics and Mormons for accurate record keeping and honesty.
Second, organized religion is notorious for scandals. They are going to abuse this power if they aren't already.'
And it isn't a straw man. If anything, it's reductio ad absurdum.

You think I fear a government takeover after reading that? Let me assure you that isn't something I worry about. The worst that could be happening is they are faking lots of records for undocumented immigrant families. That would be the reductio ad absurdum argument, but it's really not that absurd. Your government take over nonsense is just a straw man though.
