I'm in the UK too, and generally there are no fees where I've been. I'm sure Cameron is working on it.
I do really like some of our beaches.

On the north coast you usually don't pay unless it's a private area, on the east coast you will always pay, but it's very much worth it.

I'd freaking love to visit Tunis one day. I want to do a cathedral/mosque tour of Europe/North Africa, and on that list is the Acropolium and the Al-Zaytuna Mosque.

Pfft, no. But I have to pay $27 to visit Kosciuszko national park.

The annoying exception is those few places owned by the feds: Yaquina Head lighthouse for example, it's owned by the BLM together with a fair amount of beach and they charge like the national parks. A national parks pass will get you in free, but the pass isn't free.

You wouldn't want to swim without a dry suit, though.
The last time I went swimming in the ocean off the Oregon coast was in my mid-teens. The tide had gone out and left this really awesome and huge tide pool that was just shallow enough to be warmed by the sun so that you didn't get hypothermia if you got in, and just deep enough (5-foot or so) that you could actually get in and swim around. 
That was a good day at the beach...

I was talking about Egypt  , we have the Mediterranean sea on the north coast and Red sea on the east coast.
The red sea rocks, there is a place on the red sea coast called "Dahab"(which means gold in arabic), is so freaking awesome and quiet, it's like the island in the movie "The beach".
