Windows 10

RE: Windows 10
I have to at least give Linux a chance.
Any specific recommendation for a particular version of Linux for me to use?

I use OpenSuse. If you use the KDE window manager then it's quite an easy transition from Windows. I stick with what I know but there are loads of distributions out there to choose from.

I used Unix at university and so generally I'm happiest with vi, Gnu screen and the command console when I'm working.

I use Linux for doing proper work type stuff, Windows for playing games and for running applications such as Photoshop which work better running natively under Windows.

When I'm in Windows it's like computing via the medium of porridge. Everything is so slowwwwww, unwieldy and bloated.

I've heard Linux is better for the more serious stuff... Windows does seem kind of slow. Maybe I'll add Linux too, who knows.

Fucking Windows 10. I reserved it, and now I think I got it. I pressed update(I think) and I've been waiting for hours.

My OS is in german and I can't change the language in my current version of windows, so I don't understand a single thing.

German is easy to understand - it's just English spoken by someone absolutely incandescent with rage.

I like Linux Mint... but it's very much a personal preference

Which linux distro is a matter of trying which works best for you...
But the thing that makes linux different... or slower... is the Window Manager. KDE is nice; Gnome 2 (now known as MAME) was alright, but is outdated; Gnome 3 is wicked, but requires a proper hardware; cinnamon is built on top of Gnome 3 and may be very pretty, but can become sluggish (used to take over 25% of my CPU - a pentium 4 - , if I had over 5 windows open and not minimized).

RE: Windows 10
My wife's 9 year old desktop died so I had to buy her a new one.  The choices were Windows 8.1 or 10.

Bowing to the inevitable I got a Dell with Win 10.

It's..... okay, I guess.  She will use a lot more of the social media stuff than I will and she went out and bought 'Windows 10 for Dummies' which actually was quite helpful.  One thing that absolutely had to go was the Win 10 email system.  Pure shit.  I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird and she's happy again.  And when momma's happy - everybody's happy.

I'm watching the forums for the handful of games that I play to see what Win 10 problems result.  I'm not going to rush to upgrade mine.

Basically you can bring everything to run. For every game there are savvy people who come up with some kind of fix. But I'm in no hurry to update either. I know my way around in 7, everything's working fine and I simply have no need for all the fancy stuff 10 introduces.
