Can christian values take us out of recession?

Yes they can, according to Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York.
The cleric says that modern christians face a daily challenge of living by values " that the world thinks are mad ". He goes on to urge christians to use their " mad " values which pursue " common good " rather than "selfish gain " to help rebuild a country ravaged by recession.

Is this man a gifted and overlooked economist...or just plain barmy?

Neither, supporting the common good will not get the economy on track. Only the economic and political systems can do that. In any case, his whole premise that the common good belongs to christianity and that chritianity has declined due to comercialism is flawed.

The UK population remains one of the largest in terms of charity giving in the world.
Christianity has been declining steadily since the war, regardless of economic highs and lows.
