It's not just African Americans. How about indigenous people in the Caribbean and Pacific islands who's ancestors suffered unspeakable atrocities at the hands of European conquistadors? They're die-hard Catholics now - the religion of the monsters that occupied the homes of their ancestors.

Well, I'm a proud member of Hitler's race (sarcasm) and I'm an atheist so I don't have any personal insight to give. I think it's safe to say though that an emotional attachment developed somewhere along the way. At some point, the oppressed rallied around the religion of their oppressors but with themselves as the "chosen" people. Think about it. Is it any more ridiculous than Europeans rallying around a Caucasian Jesus born in the middle east? Hell, what was the point of crucifying him? It wouldn't have been long before he died of melanoma.

Religious belief is emotional, often planted by indoctrination. It doesn't make sense.

I watched this some time back; it's a good video.Since becoming an atheist, I've become very aware of other black atheists. It's just something I didn't really notice before, because I just wasn't looking.

I was speaking with a woman I'm friendly with at work not long ago, and she was in the middle of a semi-rant about Baptists and church. I asked her if she was a heathen. She said yes and asked me was it that obvious. I told her no, I just know a damn heathen when I see one, because I'm one myself. Very heartwarming stuff. 

I've got my eye on a couple of others, including this guy who keeps sarcastically stating how his "new best friend, Jesus" keeps him from letting clueless administrators and co-workers have it, all with this disdainful sneer on his face.

Oh yes, they're around.

I would argue that 99%...there's just no way. Atheism in general just isn't something that's easy collect data on. It's underreported across the board, including minority populations.

Jesus Fucking Christ, book of mormon, doctrines and covenants, pearl of great price, many sermons from Brigham Young and LDS hierarchy up until the 70's, some of the most vile stuff I've encountered, and there is some massively weird justification too; in the pre life, some souls fuck up seriously enough to merit being given black skin when personated on earth (and that means everything except white skin) and that is just the start. Worst howler was Brigham Young asserting every single 'white' soul would be saved (and remember, this is Mormon salvation, so it's a double dose of what the fuck) before any 'black' soul would be.

And in my opinion, it was particularly odious when the LDS poobahs discontinued the racial crap and essentially asserted that they were never 'racist', they were just following orders from God, and by dint of their repeated prayers they had prevailed upon God to ease up on the racial froth, and they were all too eager to follow the new rules just as soon as the new revelation was revealed.

So after the purity wedding thread I started wondering why on earth PoC cling to religion that so deeply opresses/Ed them?

You could probably ask the same question about the rest of Europe while it was being conquered by the Roman empire which is pretty much credited for the spread of Christianity if I remember rightly.

Plus I don't see it as being Christianity that oppressed anyone, it just happened to be the religion of the people doing the oppression, a lot of the first abolitionists were Christian.  People of colour, like anyone else, are oppressed by people in a stronger position who want their resources.

It's a good question though, I did wonder while I was working with people from Africa in work why it is they have such an unquestioning belief in the bible and a pretty aggressive stance against homosexuality.
