The religious have to save more for their own kind. Plus, got to save up them bribes for the missionaries so they can use them to convert the heathens to the lawd. Haymen!

I think it must be judgment based (also part of the study). If religious people are more judgmental, it make sense that they would also be less giving, because they are constantly judging other people as being unworthy.
I imagine the idea that humans are inherently bad, flawed and sinful make other kids unwilling to share with thos terribly flawed and sinful children. Maybe it also has something to do with monkey spheres, as mh.brewer points out, like perhaps they are less likely to share with people unless they know that person is part of THEIR particular cult.

Also, the fact that religious parents tended to think their kids would be more altruistic and less judgmental, while the non-religious people underestimated their children's empathy seems like some kind of religious Dunning–Kruger effect.

Thanks for sharing, I’ll have to get this to my uber religious brother and wife for the sake of my niece and nephew. It should go over very well.

Religious children are brainwashed at the start of birth, so what did you expect?
