RE: How would you suggest going about dealing with an ignorant extended family member
January 1, 2016 at 6:50 pm
I have one pair of extended family members who are complete religious wingnuts. Unfortunately, they live really close to me and used to ask to get together, mostly so they could preach. I refused. I made it very well known that not only is my entire family out and vocal atheists, but we thought the things they believed were idiotic. They now avoid us. We never see them. They've pretty much alienated themselves from everyone in the family. It's better that way.
There is nothing demonstrably true that religion can provide mankind that cannot be achieved as well or better through secular means.

Ask questions that he has to provide answers for. What is the gay agenda? What would gay people do to your kids that you're afraid of? Why do you feel it's okay to call people such a hurtful name? What makes you think it's okay to say those things to me? Make him squirm. Do not accept non-answers.
If he decides to keep on after that--lather, rinse, repeat.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
