Very good analysis. I agree.
I've seen it seep through in the language of many theists we've had on this site... their brain can't even cope with the possibility of it not all being true. The consequences are too devastating for them to even consider.
I feel truly sorry for someone in that state, they've been raised in a false reality and have become dependent on it.

I'm Christian because I believe it is the truth.
"Of course, everyone will claim they respect someone who tries to speak the truth, but in reality, this is a rare quality. Most respect those who speak truths they agree with, and their respect for the speaking only extends as far as their realm of personal agreement. It is less common, almost to the point of becoming a saintly virtue, that someone truly respects and loves the truth seeker, even when their conclusions differ wildly."

I have always been confused by the religious aspect of truth as compared to the scientific aspect of truth.
I mean, children are taught that Santa is truth.
Is it no different with religion, that children are taught that god is truth?

Very true. So then the real question is, why do religious people believe their religion is true? That's a long answer. At least for me. As has been said by Vic and King, the answer changes from person to person based on their own personal journey, and making simplistic assumptions and generalizations is counterproductive to understanding people's motives.

Some people it's fear.
Some people it's tradition.
Some people it's social stigma if you don't believe you will get unowned by family and friends.
Some people it's a life or death deal.
Some people it's due to education reasons.
Some people it's due to they are ignorance and unwillingness to accept fact over fantasy.
There are other reasons but this is just the general bit of it.

Unless there happens to be a unifying explanation which accounts for all the facts. If that is the case, then emphasis on understanding people's "motivations" would be a red herring which would obscure the truth.

Obviously Catholic Lady to believe you know the truth, you ought to believe I am deluded about the truth to some degree. You may say I don't know whether he knows God exists or not, but I believe he is wrong about his religion.
Now the truth is most of humanity is wrong about religion. Until one religion is more then half the world, that automatically is true.
So how are most of us deluded? How did we go about it wrong?
Sure all of us may have our individual path ways, but I would say there is common factors leading us astray.
We ought to learn those factors so that we don't follow the same path.
Do you believe a book from God would in detail explain the most common factors?

The fact that there are multiple beliefs upheld by nothing more than faith should speak volumes for anyone.
