Rule Change (New Staff Power)

I am not concerned about anyone on staff currently, but you never know what the future holds. I seriously wouldn't be surprised if we never used this "power."
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great

Just to be clear:
My concerns over this power have nothing - absofuckinglutely NOTHING - to do with Staff or anyone on it. My objection is to the existence of the Nuclear Option itself, whether or not it is ever used. Boru

Given the objective nature of the staff it doesn' t bother me. I've been there.

Whew... took some time to read this whole nuclear waste of a thread!
I think I understand the idea of the rule and understand the concerns raised... The way I see it, most rules currently in place apply mainly to single posts - this is a trollish post, this is a spam post, this post has a bad quote etc... And this new rule would be a sort of "no trolling" rule, but with a horizontal scope, all posts count, even if none is really trollish. It's the overall tone/attitude of the member towards the remaining population. With that in mind, I'd say that this is a welcome rule/feature.... some of us have felt the effects of such a nasty member within the past few months. And there's always he who shall not be named... As for the concerns, if the staff were not the uber-awesome* people we've come to know, I'd be equally concerned. But they're not just mindless drones out to impose the rules. They judge things and talk among themselves, before taking any action. That leads to the most balanced decisions possible. The way the rule is worded will require that all those that participate in the decision agree... it is a difficult task to annoy all mods in such a way... one must really be going for it. But... let's say, in 3 years, all the current staff has gone on with their lives, are no longer staff and only stop by occasionally ... new people will be on staff... possibly people who registered with this rule already in place... they may read it a bit more literally which could lead to trouble, specially given the rarity of its applicability. I think this is where most concerns stem from. The potential for misuse, due to lack of context - the loss of the spirit of the rule. Anyway, those are my 2cents. *butt-kissing, I know! (reserved for Beccs' butt!)
I think that's a good way of putting it. It's a trolling attitude, without explicitly breaking trolling rules. It seems to generally be constant attention/approval seeking. (If we wanted to read that, we'd go to Facebook )

I think in that eventuality, people might vote with their feet. I know I certainly would.
At the age of five, Skagra decided emphatically that God did not exist. This revelation tends to make most people in the universe who have it react in one of two ways - with relief or with despair. Only Skagra responded to it by thinking, 'Wait a second. That means there's a situation vacant.'
The oubliette sounds like an interesting subforum. I'd suggest we create one like it so when the offender is placed in a time out, they can go there.
Totally liking that idea. Disclaimer: I am only responsible for what I say, not what you choose to understand.
We used to have a place called the Gauntlet, which had a similar function. It was discontinued as being against the spirit of the forum, among other things. It's the Staff jacuzzi now.
