We think pretty seriously about retiring to Portugal. It's the right combination of inexpensive, civilized, and exotic (if you grew up in the American West). We'll spend a few weeks there in the next two or three years and if we like it a couple months in the next five years. The retirement problem is of course getting a long term visa.

Does it? I'm not fluent in Spanish, but I can read Portugese and get the text's meaning by relying on my very limited knowledge of Spanish, Latin and French. I would never dare to speak it though.
