Quote:Traditionally a country of emigration, Portugal has offered to take up to 10,000 migrants from countries struggling to cope with the influx, to help maintain its own population.
Portugal’s socialist premier Antonio Costa last week sent letters to Austria, Greece, Italy and Sweden — countries that have seen refugees arrive in large numbers — offering to welcome up to 5,800 more refugees in addition to the 4,500 they already agreed to take as part of the European Union’s refugee quota system.
Costa recently told Brussels that Portugal should “set an example”, adding that he was against “a Europe that closes its borders to block access to refugees”.
[...]
Portugal has taken just 32 migrants, and the country’s ambassador to Greece, Rui Alberto Tereno, even visited a Greek refugee camp recently in an effort to promote the sunny coastal nation to the migrants making their way across Europe.

Does it? I'm not fluent in Spanish, but I can read Portugese and get the text's meaning by relying on my very limited knowledge of Spanish, Latin and French. I would never dare to speak it though.

The only spoken foreign language where I daresay to understand even the slangs, is english.
As for Portugese. If they speak slowly enough, I get a bit of the meaning. I'm a collector of revolutionary songs, and yours - Grandola - is pretty understandable to me. Again, drawing from Spanish and Latin.

I don't know what your benefit/healthcare system is like in Portugal, but I'm guessing its harder to get handouts over there.
The pork thing may also be something to do with it.

That song became associated with the 1974 revolution that put the previous dictatorship away, as it was played on the radio as the signal for the military to start the whole thing.

Portugal's healthcare is pretty much on par with the UK's NHS, I think...
There may be some details that differ... some for the better, some for the worse... as you'd expect.

Just curious, but why is there even a Portugal ?
Seems like Spain should have just absorbed them over the centuries . . .

Spanish guys and Portuguese guys are equally hot. I don't see the point of differentiating.
