This. Regardless of whether or not some consider it a "religion". If some lady from another state can sport a collander on her head, in her driver's license photo for religious reasons, then the guy in jail should be able to celebrate whatever he deems a religion.

Granting Patafarianism religious status does Pastafarianism a disservice. It is clearly a parody of religion. Granting it religious status just puts it on the shelf with all the other ridiculous shit it was created to expose.

The whole idea of a "legitimate religion" is absurd in the first place.

It's all total bullshit. How can you have legitimate bullshit?

It's just an overblown superstition that lots of people share. The government deciding which of these you're allowed to do and which you aren't is retarded. Of course, secular law must always trump any religious laws people impose on themselves. So even if it's Pastafarianism, if they're asking to do something which violates laws everyone else has to abide by, then the answer should be no. The same should go for all religions. But if they're not allowed to do it "because it's not a real religion", then that is crap.

It's also why I'm against tax exempt status (unless they go through the proper procedure) and closed books. Why grant that privelege when the government deems the cult sufficiently bloated in status? It's fucking stupid.
