RE: Origin of life
The theory of Evolution explains the diversity of life, not the origin of life.

You may want to look into Abiogenesis

A great site to make you literate in the theory of Evolution is TalkOrigins

RE: Origin of life
Evolution doesn't explain the origins of life. It explains how things change over time.

The most accepted hypothesis on the creation of life several billion years ago is Abiogenesis.

You could do worse than to pop over to Richard Dawkins website and watch his Christmas Lectures called Growing Up In The Universe then try to find Neil DeGrasse Tysons documentories called Origins 1, 2, 3 & 4.

They might be available on Google Video but if not and you don't mind pushing your luck a bit then get yourself a copy of eMule or BearShare and download them.

In fact, there are many PBS Nova documentories that you can download about evolution. If you live in the U.S. then you can watch them from their own website.

Don't install BearShare, it will fuck up your computer with spyware. Use Limewire instead, it is open source.

Whatever you do, don't watch stuff by Creationists or Intelligent Design theorists without watching them get debunked by proper scientists.

Richard Dawkins Christmas Lectures. This is a really good introduction to evolution. It assumes you know nothing about the subject at all. Cool

Click on the video window to activate it and then hit Play..

Growing Up In The Universe - Waking Up In The Universe

Designed and Designoid Objects

Climbing Mount Improbable

The Ultraviolet Garden

The Genusis of Purpose

Bearshare Lite 5.2.5.1 is ok. I've had it running for months now with no problems and I frequently run Norton and Spybot, but yes, be very careful with these programmes.

In my experience, Limewire just wants to show you porn and hog your processor. eMule is probably the best way to go as you can see comments about the file and also check all the other filenames to see if you are really downloading what you think you are.

Thanks guys, the main reason I want to learn about evolution is because of a fundie who claims it is a "unproven theory"...and is gleeful that ID is taught in schools along with evolution in louisiana..WTF

Ah, I didn't realize they had released a "lite" version. I still think torrents completely destroy the need for P2P across these types of programs. Azureus is by far the most powerful torrenting tool.

Well yes, the theory of Evolution is an unproven theory. If it were proven it would be a "Law". The fact still remains that there is more than enough evidence to support the theory, and Evolution itself (the actual process) is a fact. You should refute his argument with the fact that ID is also an "unproven" theory, and that there is no evidence for ID like there is for Evolution. The theory also lacks the evidence of the designer, which means it is incomplete.
