Don't worry Iggy, I don't want to derail your thread I think we agree that body/brain and mind are one and the same thing so I'm happy to leave irrelevant metaphysical conjecture about the whys and wherefores to another time and place. Besides, I think I went as far down that rabbit hole as I needed to go in that other thread

@ emjay,
Only that your pain apparatus, both in form and function..comes to you by way of ancestors who did not have your sentience apparatus. Or, at least not as sentience has come to be understood.
I am the Infantry. I am my country’s strength in war, her deterrent in peace. I am the heart of the fight… wherever, whenever. I carry America’s faith and honor against her enemies. I am the Queen of Battle. I am what my country expects me to be, the best trained Soldier in the world. In the race for victory, I am swift, determined, and courageous, armed with a fierce will to win. Never will I fail my country’s trust. Always I fight on…through the foe, to the objective, to triumph overall. If necessary, I will fight to my death. By my steadfast courage, I have won more than 200 years of freedom. I yield not to weakness, to hunger, to cowardice, to fatigue, to superior odds, For I am mentally tough, physically strong, and morally straight. I forsake not, my country, my mission, my comrades, my sacred duty. I am relentless. I am always there, now and forever. I AM THE INFANTRY! FOLLOW ME!

I find it amusing how it "feels" like the pain is coming from a particular area, but really it's just your brain lighting up a bit of itself and going "no dude".

Pain is not -just- a bit of brain lighting up. If it were, we wouldn't know the difference between being stabbed in the back and punched in the face.

Yeah, I don't mean the same part Bad wording.
I mean it's telling you a certain part of its map is being damaged, but it makes it feel like the pain is "coming from" that part.
This is all a bit redundant since all of my experience is generated by the brain anyway. So stupid comment.

Not stupid, I don't think..but maybe on point. A directional sense of pain, a location...would seem to provide more utility than, say..general nausea as a response to damaging stimuli.

Physical Pain is necessary, it's how we can detect when something bad happens in a particular area. Emotional Pain I can live without, because it ruins my life.

I don't think I could. I miss the longing and desperation of my teens.....as I approach 40, for example, lol. Some suffering is just so damned good..in retrospect.
