Does not say if she bothered to tell an employee about that, or if that is the cause of the death.

Just a really horrible tragedy though. Sad

If she rode it the second time after finding harness not working the first time, Perhaps she deserved to die more than the child.

I totally overprotect my kid. I try hard not to overdue it, but it is like fighting gravity. She is the only kid I have or will ever have.

I still encourage her to go have adventures on her own, but she will always be correctly seatbelted in a car, helmeted on a bike or scooter, and supervised while playing out of doors.

I was allowed to run around in the wilderness, pretty much literally, from ages 6 to 18. I got chewed up by razor wire, stepped on a rust nail also like Losty, but outside, bitten by more than one stupid neighbor dog, almost drowned when I fell in the canal out back of our house, and really nearly died in a car crash at age 17, where my friend was driving recklessly.

I think it's amazing anyone lives through their teens.

Maybe I am too sensitive about it I don't know. I just don't think these jokes are funny. For almost 8 years now I've been anywhere from playfully teased to harshly belittled all because I care about my kids supposedly too much. I fail to see the joke.

You know there are sane protections. Such as seatbelting your child or having an eye on her when being outside. My father even installed a seat belt in the backseat of his car for me to be protected. That was back in the early 70ies when only nerds and professional race drivers used seat belts. Way before child seats were even a thing. That's a valid approach, and remembering it saved my life later on when I, driving on myself, got into an accident. I was belted in, though it still wasn't that common in the early 80ies.

I'll stay out of it, then.

We are "over protective" parents as well, Losty. Don't feel bad. We have even had friends give us funny looks over saying things like, 'we would like to be home by 6ish because Christopher goes to bed around 7." Like, suddenly we are insanely neurotic people for wanting our child to get a good night's sleep. We are the parents, and it's our job to take care of our children who cannot take care of themselves. I will never let anyone make me feel guilty about that. Maybe I watch too much Dateline, but I honestly don't even care.

"Well, we all survived, didn't we?" does not support an argument in favor or against anything, because all the kids who didn't "make it" aren't here to represent. It's an anecdotal response to real world dangers.

I have actually heard women say this same exact thing in response to the "Back to Sleep" campaign despite the fact that it has reduced the number of SIDS deaths considerably. Sure, you survived, but plenty of other babies who were put on their stomachs to sleep because we didn't know any better didn't. If I jumped out of an airplane without a parachute and happened to survive, I'm pretty damn lucky, but my individual circumstance is not enough evidence to start telling people they are being "overly cautious" by using parachutes while sky diving.

I don't think having an early evening for the sake of my son's sleep -- something I've done many a time -- is overprotective. And I didn't just make my son use a helmet riding a bike, I set the example by donning one myself. That is not "overprotective".

At the same time, I took him trail-biking, canoeing, and taught him to shoot before he was twelve -- precisely because I wanted to imbue my approach to doing what might be risky with an attitude of safety.

I think there's a happy middle ground where we can encourage adventurousness and at the same time inculcate safety lessons.

Full disclosure: I was a free-range kid, with parents who encouraged me to get out and about. I may be biased even as I try to be balanced.
