Oddly enough I was just thinking this would make an interesting idea for a site... not this site but a site... a site with no names. All users and posts identifiable behind the scenes of course, but no publicly visible usernames... and probably not a forum either per se but rather a place to write essays etc. So that all posts would be taken on their merits alone and there would be no possibility - barring people learning each other's writing styles or users actually identifying themselves in their posts - of popularity contests or peer pressure affecting responses. But you guys are saying this sort of thing already exists, EP with positive experiences of it and CD with negative - shitposting?

I was just thinking giving the average user on AF the freedom of posting anonymously wouldn't be the worse idea in the world, but apparently nobody agrees with me.

Well I was thinking more along the lines of a dedicated site to it... where that was it's USP. I'm not sure how well it would integrate into a site - like this - that would be doing the other method as well. And I don't know if it would even be technically feasible for this site because it runs on pre-existing forum software... I forget the name... so though that may allow minor tweaks to the functionality of the forum, I don't know if this would require too much of an overhaul... but as you say, if other forums have that feature, this one might have as well. It would certainly be interesting if say just one forum, or one thread even, had that feature enabled if it exists.

So that people would be more likely to consider my ideas free of any negative impressions I may have created in earlier postings?  Sure, why should I be held accountable for whatever some jerk who used to be me might or might not have said in the past?


I suppose it could be a particular thread or sub-forum but I can't imagine it would be very popular and I imagine it would be a lot of extra work for the mods who, dang it, are still working for free.

Yeah, it sounds great fun when you put it like that... and part of the fun would be trying to out-fox the guessers by varying writing styles etc or keeping it short and sweet.

I'd use it if it was available but as I said, only if it was an existing feature of the site or easily implementable if not... i.e. not too much work for the mods, admins, or programmers.

Hopefully as a mod I'll be able to keep track better, but so far here, whenever someone changes their name I have a great deal of trouble remembering who the hell they were before.

If you do try this, I'd advise picking a new name other than NotExcitedPenguin.
