Depends, it's a felony in most states. Most of the time the charges are reduced or dropped entirely - unless the state really doesn't like someone. People might secure their shit...just like the law requires in every single state...if people went to jail for not securing their shit....like the law states in every single state. At the very least, they could take the guns away from people who refuse to comply with the law...and in so doing ping their ass on a federal sheet - preventing them from purchasing another.

That's how all of this -would- work (and does, for *certain demographics), if we cared to enforce our laws.......which we don't.

In tragic accident, deputy fatally struck by bullet from colleague’s gun, sheriff says

The gun went off as Lucas and three colleagues gathered Monday afternoon in a room at the sheriff’s special investigations unit office near Fresno Yosemite International Airport.

At a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Mims said Lucas and a colleague, described only as a detective, were discussing safety of backup weapons when the detective’s gun went off.

Safety Rule #1, boys.  Don't pull the fucking trigger when a gun is aimed at someone you DON'T want to shoot.

See, number 1 hedges against the -inevitability- of operator error.  You can be a shit-for-brains neck with a fat trigger finger and a compulsive twitch....and it won't matter...if you just stop pointing the damned thing at or in the general direction -of- people.  

Being responsible isn't about not ever experiencing an accidental discharge, it's about forming habits over a long period of time that prevent a -negligent- discharge. Which is why the one week training course means jack shit. It's people who think their police training, or their handgun course are safegaurds, it's people that fail to form these habits or become too comfortable and subsequently careless...that almost invariably pop up in these stories.
