Already taken care of.  The Retropie is definitely the better solution.  I got it yesterday and set it up.  And man, am I glad I didn't wait until Christmas day to do it.  There were a couple of issues.  Getting the ROMs onto the thing was not as straight forward as it was supposed to be.

The first option was supposed to be really easy, if really slow.  Just format a USB drive, put a "retropie" directory on it, plug it into the Retropie, wait for lights to stop flashing, unplug it, plug it into the computer, copy ROMs to the right directorys, plug it back into the Retropie.  A lot of steps, but automatic.  But the Retropie never made the directories it was supposed to.

The next option was to access it as a network share.  Go to Start, Run, type in \\retropie and it brings up the folder list.  Copy the ROMs over the network.  Much faster.  Didn't work.

Next I tried with the IP address.  Start, Run, \\192.168.0.132 (got the IP from the machine).  Didn't work.

Finally I had to download an FTP client and transfer things that way.  Not quite as easy as the drag-and-drop of the shared folders, but pretty easy and quicker than USB.

And this thing is WAY better than the Nintendo Classic would have been.  It even emulates old cabinet arcade machines, though that one is a little tougher to get going than the other stuff.

Once set up it's easy as pie to use.  The SNES-type controllers that come with it work for just about any game before N64, which had the joystick.  The exception s are some of the newer Atari stuff, which had the paddles and/or number pads, and some of the cabinet arcade games which sometimes had unique controllers, such as attached guns which you used to aim and such.  I haven't tried it on everything, of course, but I assume the 6 buttons on the controller will cover the 6 button Sega controller just fine even though the placement is different.  In the setup they are tied to specific positions on the controller, so I'm not sure about that.

This kid is a video game fanatic and I get to see his face when he starts Zero Wing, sees "All your base are belong to us" and realizes what he's playing.  He was interested in "historic" games and that's what he's getting in spades!

EDIT: 49 pounds is roughly 60 US dollars, actual retail value.  But you'll see the gray "Out of stock" button on that page.  Profiteers have bought them all up and are reselling them at ridiculous prices, and I'm glad they have because the Retropie is so much better.
Have you ever noticed all the drug commercials on TV lately?  Why is it the side effects never include penile enlargement or super powers?
Side effects may include super powers or enlarged penis which may become permanent with continued use.  Stop taking Killatol immediately and consult your doctor if you experience penis enlargement of more than 3 inches, laser vision, superhuman strength, invulnerability, the ability to explode heads with your mind or time travel.  Killatoll is not for everyone, especially those who already have convertibles or vehicles of ridiculous size to supplement penis size.

Buy 2 sticks of better-rated RAM for the same money.  Unless you are rendering 3D graphics, processing video files, and playing the newest video games all at the same time, you'll never need more than 16Gb.

/2 cents from a programmer and video editor who has never used more than about 10Gb max.

Especially on that processor.  Unless you're doing a "RAM drive", but I haven't seen one of those in years.  I'm sure they're still a thing, though.

Yeah I remember how important those used to be.  I mean-- imagine playing a whole game without having to change among 4 different floppy disks!

It was pretty cool.  And the speed!

Just a follow up, it was a huge hit!  Most played so far are actually Mario games, Mario Kart topping the list.  It was a great game.  He was excited to play Zero Wing when he realized what it was, but left it right away.  He spent the first few hours jumping from game to game.  Mortal Kombat was briefly a huge hit, but the thing came with SNES controllers and the best MK was on Genesis, so it was hard to look up combos for it because the buttons didn't match up by name.  I think I can change that, though, by figuring it out and doing a finishing move when they aren't expecting it.  When they see me rip a head off I think they'll be very interested to learn the button mapping.
