Anti-Matter at CERN

Anti-Matter at CERN
While some people are still sacrificing goats , scientists are creating anti-matter and photographing it annihilating with matter. They also are hitting anti-matter with lasers.

God thinks it's fun to confuse primates. Larsen's God!

Sacrificing goats, or thinking Jesus sacrificed for them, much the same idiotic thing. Too bad such stupidity has no anti-particle.

Wow, I feel completely useless now.  Thanks a lot!   Tongue

Just so you get a better idea what Antimatter and Antimatter explosions don't look like in the slightest:

And here an interesting discussion which completely garbles what the Higgs boson has to do with Antimatter and the Big Bang

And here an interesting visualization how the ATLAS experiment and the LHC don't work at all, although they added some hilarious inside jokes (such as the jab against heavy ion physicists)

The footage is mostly real (the 100 meter deep vertical tunnel with the experiments at the bottom, and the general look of the experiment). But the control center is *not* next to the detector and looks a bit more pedestrian. Also, the LHC Detectors are not in principle able to collect antimatter.

What a great movie. I love this movie.

Of course every scientist always wears a white lab coat when they're sitting behind a computer all day and not dealing with any toxic or biological materials. That's how we know that they're scientists. Remember, they're not normal computers, they're sciency computers and therefore need to be used while wearing a white lab coat. But not sciency enough to require the use of gloves.

I've never heard of Angels & Demons before, but I presume physicists laugh at it like geologists laugh at Armageddon.

Well, let's say it this way, if you'd sit down there in the cavern while the experiment is running as depicted, even a lab coat would probably not save you from being grilled (although the radiation level during operation isn't instantly deadly I think, just well above usual limits).
The actual ATLAS control center as it is, overground, is mostly populated by grad students donning T-shirts Smile

I never saw the film, but the book had so many scientific errors I couldn't finish it

I was sufficiently able to turn my brain off to enjoy the books.
"There remain four irreducible objections to religious faith: that it wholly misrepresents the origins of man and the cosmos, that because of this original error it manages to combine the maximum servility with the maximum of solipsism, that it is both the result and the cause of dangerous sexual repression, and that it is ultimately grounded on wish-thinking." ~Christopher Hitchens, god is not Great
