Yeah, I spent years expecting a sophisticated argument to come from somewhere. I now find it amazing that religion is still around given how feeble the arguments actually are.

I saw the Tanner book on Mormons and the Mormons absolutely astonishing self-documented corruption of their own religion, starting with Joe Smith himself. And I was almost lamenting that Christianity does not have the same paper trail  from their formation the Mormons have regarding their own.

Then Ehrman comes to the rescue!

The underpinnings of Christianity are amenable to examination and Ehrman has done precisely that, and done it with probity and skill.  And guess what?  Christianity is congenitally self-corrupted, and the penultimate false religion!  Christianity was literally stillborn, and has been on the theological equivalent of 100% life support since 33 A.D.

There is more than enough evidence in the Bible alone to clearly compel  the conclusion (even assuming for the sake of argument that Christ existed, as IMO, it helps, but obviously isn't required) Jesus viewed himself as a Jewish messiah fronting for the Jewish God to fulfill Jewish law for the Jewish people and that His religion was Judaism.  That subsequent corruption has birthed a hybrid mutant Franken-faith of  multi-myriadic  schisms of the religion about Jesus under the generic umbrella trademark of Christianity and is literally the largest cluster fuck in recorded history.

of an actual DC8 aircraft is far more convincing evidence of the Lord Xemu than the Bible contains for Christianity !!

You can't measure the probability of the unfalsifiable. God first needs to be plausible - or at least a coherent concept - before we start arguing about how likely it is.

I agree.

The only yardstick we have for the unfalsifiable is the number of additional assumptions that have to be made for such a thing to exist. It seems reasonable that the more assumptions that are needed, the less likely the proposition is, in general. Of course some assumptions are more ridiculous than others so they won't all carry equal weight.

But it does need to be coherent and internally consistent before you can even get this far. Often it's not, as you say.
