When even the likes of a Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia understands the First Amendment doesn't mean anything if it doesn't protect unpopular speech, is it too much to expect that it otta be damn hard to round up enough people to deface a phone booth, let alone to shut down an entire university ??

This is why protests need to be organized rather than reactionary. And really it isn't that hard. Especially when we have historic figures to look to. Look at John Lewis and the SNCC. Their non-violent movement had a mission statement printed out and handed to each member. They were literally on the same page. They even held mocked up scenarios where members would scream at you to practice keeping calm.

Not to get too conspiratorial, but it's a good idea to have a badge or some unifying element, if not a full on uniform to protect the protest from sabotage from a plant. It may sound dumb and paranoid, but it's a fact that the easiest way to discredit a protest is to change the narrative from the core message to "these people are breaking stuff", and all it takes is one person to poison the well.
