Why do some religious people think the world revolves around them?

Really? I do.
I believed stuff like... maybe the bus didn't get here on time because the god was saving me from something. Dude. You know "ZERO" people who believe that? Fuck outa here. I live in a Catholic dominated town where adults believe in prophets of this day today and they believe in ghosts. I find it hard to believe you.
Prophets and ghosts don't imply that the needs of one person are more important to the universe than the needs of many other equals. I've known plenty of people who say that type of thing knowing more or less that they're doing it for the temporary comfort it affords, but who give me the impression that they don't actually believe it or take it all that seriously. That, to me, is unheard of. The moment I read the OP, I immediately thought "well, ok. But surely you can't think your FIL literally believes that"

Maybe it wasn't so much that God didn't want him to paint as it was that God was answering the prayers of farmers whose crops needed rain.
Nah, he wanted to see a car crash.

Ok. So, what's your point? Lol
So you live in a bubble where someone says she used to believe a certain way, and because you never met anyone who did... what? What is it? What's the point? I've met theists who don't like it when the way others handle faith is too embarrassing, so they deny the legitimacy of what is being said. Is that it?
I was the kind of theist who believed dumb things. I was raised by my pastor parents to believe crazy things, yes, even past age five. Saying that you never met anyone who seriously believes this way does not mean it's a non existent thing. Good for you! Lol but I mean... what's your point? I didn't really believe that? I must have a mental disability, because believing stuff like that past age five is unheard of?

I think you have captured the essence of religion with this observation. And of human nature.

Because they said God seddso

First and foremost, I want to apologize if I was rudely dismissive of your experience. That wasn't my intention and my reaction was partially due to a misreading of your initial response. In my experience, most of the time I've heard expressions like that, it was either just an expression of frustration/resolve, or a substitution of God for Fate (I.e. If there's such a thing as destiny, then obviously, painting the house today is not part of it), so that's what I thought it probably meant, and when you dismissively said "nah, it probably means yada yada", I thought you were just stubbornly asserting your interpretation despite that probability. I honestly wasn't trying to disrespect you. My point, for the OP, was that it's possible It was taken too literally. I always presume people don't actually want to think ill of others if they don't have to, so I wrote that in case the OP hadn't really thought of it as a possibility.

Fair enough.
